Full Depth Reclamation (FDR)
Full depth Reclamation (FDR) is the rehabilitation process in which the full thickness of the asphalt pavement, base/sub-base and a pre-determined portion of the subgrade are uniformly pulverized and blended with a specified type and amount of chemical additive such as lime, fly ash, cement, or asphalt emulsion resulting in a stabilized base course. A new asphalt surface is then installed on the new FDR base.
Benefits of Full Depth Reclamation:
- Conservation of non-renewable resources
- Correction of subgrade deficiencies
- Deteriorated base can be reshaped to restore proper surface profile and drainage
- Significant structural improvement with the addition of additive(s)
- Produces thick, bound layers that are homogeneous
- Flexibility in the choice of wearing surface type and thickness
- Economic advantage over removal and replacement of existing asphalt and aggregate base
